If someone asked who the hardest-working person in your business is, you might say your best salesperson, your customer service team or even yourself.
I’d argue it’s your content.
A well-written blog, an informative video or a helpful social media post can work for your business 24/7. It answers questions and demonstrates expertise, often introducing new customers to your business long before they ever pick up the phone or send an email.
That’s the real value of content marketing. It isn’t simply about posting more. It’s about creating useful content that keeps working long after you hit publish.
CONTENT MARKETING IS AN INVESTMENT, NOT AN EXPENSE
I still find that many small businesses think of marketing as something they do when business is quiet or when they have a promotion to announce. We’ve all seen the posts: “Cancellation appointment available today” or “Enter our competition”. Promotions certainly have their place, but the problem is that promotional content has a very short lifespan.
Helpful content is different. A blog answering a common customer question, a video demonstrating your expertise or a guide that solves a genuine problem can continue attracting website visitors for months or even years. This is known as evergreen content (we look at how it compares with topical content in Evergreen or Topical Content – Which is better?). Every piece becomes a valuable asset that lives on your website and can be shared again and again. Over time, you build a library of knowledge that strengthens your brand.
TRUST BEGINS BEFORE THE FIRST CONVERSATION
Today’s customers do their homework. At client meetings and training sessions, I often ask people what they do first when a business is recommended to them. Almost every time, the answer is the same: before they get in touch, they visit the website, browse the social media and read the content.
Potential customers are asking themselves questions like:
- Do these people know what they’re talking about?
- Do they understand businesses like mine?
- Can I trust them?
Quality content answers those questions without feeling like a sales pitch. It allows potential customers to get to know your business, your personality and your expertise before you ever meet. That’s why content is often your first salesperson: it starts the conversation for you.
IT’S NOT ABOUT REINVENTING THE WHEEL
One of the biggest misconceptions I come across about content marketing is that it requires endless new ideas. In reality, the smartest businesses simply make more of the ideas they already have.
Imagine you write one blog article. From that single piece you could create:
- A LinkedIn thought leadership post
- Two or three Facebook posts
- An Instagram carousel or reel
- A client newsletter feature
- A short video answering the key question
- Website FAQs based on the same topic
Suddenly, a couple of hours of focused work has produced weeks of valuable marketing content and lots of different ways of communicating your “why”.
MEASURE ENQUIRIES, NOT POPULARITY
Likes and followers are of course nice, and it’s really exciting when a post gets good initial engagement. But they’re rarely the best measure of success (we talk more about this in 7 Signs Your Marketing Is Busy But Not Effective). Instead, ask the questions that really matter and that bring leads to your business:
- Are more people visiting your website?
- Are they spending time reading your articles?
- Are enquiries becoming more informed?
- Are clients mentioning a blog or video they saw?
Great content doesn’t have to go viral, and it rarely does. More often, it quietly builds credibility until the right customer needs exactly what you offer. It’s about creating visibility so that when a customer is looking for the answer to their problem, you are there with it.
START SOLVING INSTEAD OF SELLING
If you’re wondering what to write about, don’t start with what you want to promote. Start with what your customers ask every day. Every frequently asked question is a potential blog. Every client conversation is a content idea. Every problem you solve is an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise.
While there is often a place for advertising, the businesses with the strongest marketing aren’t necessarily the loudest. They’re usually the ones consistently providing value and gradually earning your trust.
Because at the end of the day, good content doesn’t interrupt people. It helps them. And the businesses that consistently help are the ones people remember.
NEXT STEPS
So now it’s over to you. Take a few minutes this week to think about the questions your customers ask you most often. Write them down. That list of frequently asked questions is the start of your content plan. Pick one, answer it well, publish it and then share it in as many ways as you can.
